Medical Instrument Technologist (Diagnostic Ultrasound)

Technologists at this grade level serve as supervisory or non-supervisory (MIT) (Diagnostic Ultrasound Technologists) for Radiology Service at Chalmer's P. Wylie in Columbus, Ohio. At this level, ultrasound technologists independently perform a full range of complex examinations which are routine and standardized or may be non-standardized in nature. They position the patient as needed for the best test results, set up and adjust the ultrasound equipment to meet the condition of the examination. Duties include, but are not limited to: Receives requests for ultrasound examinations including abdominal, renal, GYN, and small parts. Has basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and cross-sectional imaging. Explains procedures to patients for desired results. Selects and operates the appropriate ultrasound transducer and settings needed for an exam. Cleans equipment and patient care area after use. Performs picture archival (PACS) duties. The technologist captures digital images, configures the image, and verifies patient information before transmitting to PACS. May alter established exam routine per patient need or limitation and provide high quality images. Uses color and Pulsed Wave doppler to differentiate between blood vessels and solid or cystic structures. Measures blood flow velocity and direction of flow. Performs ultrasound exams not limited to the abdomen, pelvis, endocavity, chest, small parts, thyroid, breast, and scrotum. Performs vascular studies for aorta, renal artery, ovarian artery, Carotid artery, and the portal-venous system among others. Assists Radiologist or Surgeon in performing fluid aspirations. Advises radiologist or referring clinician of significant abnormalities that require immediate attention. Evaluates the nature of critical procedures, rearranges patient schedules to accommodate such studies. Participate in department meetings or other discussion in matters regarding ultrasound. Reviews pertinent history in the medical record prior to beginning exam. Helps expedite workflow between patient registration and completion of exam. May represent Radiology Service in higher level meetings. Makes recommendations on new equipment purchases. Reviews new developments in the field and recommends to the supervisor those that would improve operations. Communicates well with all staff and customers. Initiates and provides training for new equipment or for periodic review. Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be specialized experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of diagnostic ultrasonography services. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk(*): ???????Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. KSAs 1, 2, and 3 are appropriate for all positions at this level. KSAs 4 and 5 are to be used in accordance with their appropriateness for the specific assignment. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols that pertain to diagnostic ultrasonography.
