Motor Vehicle Operator

The employee will serve as a Motor Vehicle Operator at the Louis Stokes VA Medical Center, in Cleveland, OH. The employee is responsible for providing a wide range of transportation duties such as but not limited to the following: transporting patients (and their family members), employees, medical/general supplies, delivering mail and emergency runs as they arise. Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Perform vehicle transport of medical and office supplies, equipment and mail. Operate and maintain various powered industrial vehicles. Maintain vehicle in a neat, clean and orderly manner. Perform routine safety and maintenance checks on the vehicle. Use forklifts, manual and mechanized pallet jacks, and other loading and storage mechanisms. Place cargo appropriately in vehicles on shelving, pallets or bins to ensure adequate safeguard and access. Maintain the flow of the medical facility deliveries by moving, delivering, shelving, storing and inventorying materials and equipment in all traffic conditions. Follow oral instruction from dispatcher and/or supervisor pertaining to transporting, destination, cargo, deadlines and any additional/special instruction. Understand how to load supply carts, vehicles or pallets to ensure safety and most efficient process. Handle delivering and warehousing materials including hazardous, flammable and temperature sensitive products. Have a familiarity with emergency response procedures to summon aid if a medical emergency arises. Read, write and maintain files of various organizational and commercial documents to include accident reports, incident reports, discrepancy reports, shipping/receiving documents, and trip logs. Direct special attention to time sensitive and emergency requests. Use proper safety techniques when loading and unloading vehicles. Perform other related duties as assigned. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. To qualify for this position, you must meet the following requirements: Driving various types of transport vehicles; loading and unloading patients and medical supplies; performing operator maintenance such as checking fluid levels, tire air pressure, cleaning and washing vehicles; reviewing/conducting inspection checklists to ensure safe and proper operation; driving predetermined and/or scheduled routes or special runs; using a two-way radio (or other device) to maintain communications with dispatcher/supervisor; practicing and promoting safe work and driving habits; and following standard safety procedures. (This experience must be documented on your resume.) AND Commercial Driver's License (CDL): A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake and Passenger endorsement is required for this position. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you will be required to provide a copy of your valid state-issued Commercial Driver's License. Physical Effort: Moderate exertion is required in operating, turning, backing and controlling vehicles that carry heavy loads and/or large numbers of people. In addition to good vision the work will require prolonged periods of sitting, standing or stooping. Occasionally handles objects weighing over 150 pounds with assistance while loading and unloading trucks. Working Conditions: Drives in all types of traffic and weather conditions and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents. The employee is subjected to noise levels up to 85 dbs for up to eight hours a day. May be required to work staggered shifts to include holidays.
